Aydan Tai Kool
My name is Aydan. I was born in the UK, but was raised (and am still living) in Singapore.
The thought of being a pilot had always sounded appealing to me, but I never really got the opportunity to attempt anything of the sort in Singapore. Thanks to the 1 week Introductory Extra flight camp for teenagers organised by TVSA, for which I flew over to Australia to attend, I have now found myself entering a new and exciting phase of my life.
Originally, I had no idea what to expect. I knew that I would get some flying hours clocked in, but having never had flight training before, I did not know whether I would actually enjoy flying. As it turned out, I found the experience exhilarating. The first flight really does exceed every expectation you have of flying.
I had not expected to learn anything about aeronautics, or about what effects certain atmospheric factors cause to an aeroplane in flight, and what to do if these effects are negative. I had learnt all this and more in flight camp. Not only are all the instructors/teachers really nice and friendly, they have very efficient teaching methods, from which I truly benefitted. What struck me most was the manner in which they made even dry sounding topics (for example, the effects of the engineering of a wing) come to life in a practical, relevant way. In the week that I was in flight camp, I clocked in 9 hours of flying time, and am now able pretty much to take-off and land a Cessna 150/152. There were tours as well, where we got to see the inner workings of different segments of the aviation industry, to broaden our exposure to available career choices. I had so much fun, and learnt so much! I find it amazing that I can fly before I can drive!
Flight camp has not only helped me broaden my knowledge on basic aeronautics, flying and aeroplanes, it has, more importantly, helped me determine what I want to do with my life. I now know that I definitely want to be a pilot, and I plan on continuing with TVSA to achieve my ultimate goal: to become a commercial pilot.
